摘要

It was twenty to nine on Friday, the last day of winter. The author was in a barley paddock trying to assess how long the crop could survive without rain. The crop was thick and the flag leaves broad. The heads were up in the boot but had not yet emerged. A Holden car came down the dirt road, crossed the highway, did a U turn, stopped and waited. The author moved out of the barley paddock and went over the fence into a wheat crop on the other side of the dirt road. When he came out, he went over to the parked car. At that stage two girls got out of the side doors and boarded the school bus.
