AGRICULTURE plays a major role in the flows of the green-se gases carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory identifies agriculture as responsible for almost 20% of net national greenhouse emissions. Canfarmers do anything to reduce these emissions? And if they do, what impact will it have on productivity? Some farming practices increase soil carbon levels; others run down the store of carbon in the soil, often releasing it into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
