The Mandalong lamb grain finishing system is a novel approach which is reaping rewards in terms of meat quality for Mark Taylor and his father, Geoff, from Walcha, New South Wales. The system involves buying finished lambs about 20-22kg carcase weightand feeding them for about four weeks on high-energy pellets in small, well pastured paddocks with a natural spring-fed water supply (see Australian Farm Journal, May, 2005). The result is a 24-26kg carcase with outstanding eating quality. To complement the innovative grain finishing program the Taylors have developed a unique supply chain to bring the lamb to consumers while generating a premium for quality.
