Pros and cons of NLIS

In this two-part series, by Catherine Sudholz, we ask producers to comment on the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS), the advantages and disadvantages of equipment used, as well as their experiences with computers, software and access to information on the NLIS database. It has been almost four years since the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) was introduced in Australia. While the concept has been accepted by many producers, some believe there is still room for improvement and fine-tuning. The NLIS is a system of permanent identification. Each animal is identified once for life with an approved NLIS device, which contains a unique, unalterable number. The number can be linked to the owner of the animal and a property through the NLIS database. When the animal is sold, changes of ownership, movements from property to property, other important information relating to disease, residue or market eligibility can be read from the devices and then recorded and checked on theNLIS database.
