Using ASBVs can take merinos into the high-quality lamb industry

In Western Australia, participants in the sheepmeat industry including processors, research scientists and producers are calling for wider adoption of Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) for improvement of carcase traits in Merinos. The Merino industry has a huge potential for improvement in growth and carcase traits, and Merino sheep can be efficiently selected for dual-purpose meat and wool production by using ASBVs. Further, certain ASBVs have been shown to positively impact on management issues including weaning rates, flystrike and internal worms.
