Canola biodiesel outlook becoming stronger in Canada

The Canadian government will be mandating the use of biodiesel in the near future, as they did with ethanol in recent years. Farmers on the Canadian Prairies will benefit from having this additional market for off-grade canola, and from other bio-energy opportunities as well. Treena Hein explains how. In the early 1990s, a group of local canola growers and other concerned community members from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, got together to talk. More and more young people were leaving the area forgood, not having any worthwhile career opportunities to stay for. Someone posed the question: what if the part of the canola harvest that gets damaged by frost each year could be turned into fuel? This idea was exciting, because if it worked, it would provide jobs, give farmers extra income and make the community a vibrant bio-energy leader.
