Queensland forage crop dollar returns show surprising variation

Forage crops are useful in all farming systems to supply seasonally specific feed sources and to rejuvenate soil health. In northern Australia forage sorghum and oats dominate the summer and winter seasons. But a series of forage crops trials in southern Queensland demonstrates that there may be better options available. Dr Lindsay Bell reviewed the results during GRDC Northern Grains Research Updates earlier this year. At four sites (Brigalow, Roma, Condamine, Toobeah) the production of four summer-and four winter-growing forages were compared over the last three years (Table 1 and 2).
