Eastern wheat crop to cover WA shortfall

New-season wheat crops have established well through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. But they need to get over a number of potential threats in spring. The main problem for volume lies in Western Australia. About 85% of intended wheat sowings were in the ground by mid-Jun, as more growers moved to no-till cropping and also seeding by the calendar. Further sowings were made in the great southern and eastern wheat belt in late June and early July. In early July, not all sown crops in the Geraldton zone had emerged; crops on heavy black soils had not come through. But a saving rain of 20 millimetres-plus went through all of the WA wheat belt on July 8.
