The amount of grain exported out of the eastern states In recent years has been low. The main reasons have been the run of eastern states droughts and an increasing use of grain for the east coast intensive livestock industries, some being flow-on effects from drought. Around five million tonnes of feed grain is required for livestock and poultry producers, most of them situated close to the population centres of eastern Australia. Australia has a dairy cow population of around 1.6 million cows and the average grain usage per cow is 1.5 tonnes for an annual feed grain requirement of 2.4 million tonnes.
