Sorghum crops stressed

Very large areas of grain sorghum have been sown in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. This was in response to lost opportunities for seeding wheat or barley when the break was so late and then the soils were so wet and difficult to work. Commencing around Christmas, temperatures started to climb and remained high until mid January - even higher than normal. Growers were reporting poor vigour in late sown sorghum crops, and most growers attributed this to the heat.
