ALTHOUGH incidence of lice infestations in sheep appears to have decreased during the last 20 "years, this pest is still responsible for more than $160 million in annual losses to the industry. These losses are in the form of control costs and lost production. I was reminded of both this fact and the most important ingredient in sheep lice control - on-farm management - at a recent product launch in Armidale. The veterinarian leading the discussion made the point that of all the product complaints they investigate in detail, by purchasing infected sheep, applying treatment under supervised conditions and running the treated sheep in isolation, the vast majority do not repeat the "product failure" reported in the field.
