Birdlife delivers big dollar savings to farm businesses

In the second in a series of articles adapted from the new publication "Towards Sustainable Grazing - The Professional Producer's Guide", from Meat and Livestock Australia, the importance of on-farm biodiversity is explained. RESEARCH has shown that the insect-feeding habits of the ibis - a long-legged, wading bird - has saved northern Victorian cropping businesses an estimated 675,000 dollar in pest control - living proof of how a healthy birdlife on-farm can save money. Data collected shows that on100,000 hectares of cropland adjacent to the Barmah and Gunbower forests in northern Victoria, the ibis provided natural pest control which with chemical alternatives would otherwise cost about 675,000 dollar annually.
