Genomics, a new science that has developed rapidly over the past 20 years, is basically the study of genes, or the differences in DNA sequences responsible for genetic variation, which is the basis of selection. It involves directly analysing the total genes (genome) for their position on the chromosomes and then for their function. Considering there are 27 pairs of chromosomes in the sheep, and tens of thousands of genes in total, it appears a daunting task for the breeder to manipulate them all. In addition, science has up its sleeve fairly new technologies, such as transgenics and cloning.
