Why ryegrass does poorly

A plant's persistence reflects its survival from year to year. In grasses, this can occur through reproductive development to set seed, or by vegetative means through tillering. Under normal grazing management practices, extensive seeding of pasturegrasses does not generally occur. So for the plant to persist, it needs tiller survival and replacement. Tillers are functional units of bunch grasses such as ryegrass, fescue, cocksfoot and phalaris. Each tiller has its own leaves and roots but is connected to other tillers at the plant's base, and so can share water, nutrients and carbohydrates.
