Joni Bella, a popular traditional concentrated liquid jaggery is a regular sweetener in coastal Karnataka and other parts of coastal peninsular India. The area and production is declining because of uneconomic productivity, poor storability and salty taste with the currently grown local Saccharum officinarum clones viz., Konankatte, Badaas, Moris etc. On the other hand the demand for liquid jaggery in the region and outside is increasing. Hence to meet out the demands of farmers and jaggery producers, there is an urgent need of suitable substitute variety with improved productivity and quality. Concerted research efforts at ARS, Sankeshwar and ARS, Kumta led to identification of CoSnk 08101 (SNK 635) an unique and ideal variety for Joni Bella production with enhanced productivity and quality to cater the needs of this important region. The variety recorded significant superiority over both productivity and quality standards Co 86032 and Konankatte respectively. The clone was also scored excellent organoleptic scores on account of low salt content in liquid jaggery making it highly acceptable for consumers.
