Treating sheep for flystrike

THE onset of wanner weather and rain is usually good news on the farm but the presence of the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, can turn spring and early summer into a nightmare for wool-growers. That is, of course, unless they are prepared.Farmers are encouraged to run fleece rot/flystrike resistant sheep, to crutch, wig and ring susceptible sheep and, if possible, to shear sheep before flystrike becomes a problem. All this helps to minimise the need to use insecticides but, under fly wave conditions insecticides are needed to both prevent flystrike from occurring and to treat strikes on sheep.
