AN INDEPENDENT approach and a determination to cut through the 'bumf to get to the heart of a matter has seen a southern Queensland couple turn a small vegetable growing enterprise into a multi-million dollar business. Howard and Adele Poole own andoperate Poole's Produce Pty Ltd, a modern horticultural business growing 70 hectares of lettuce and 40ha of Chinese cabbage on an aggregation of farms near the food-bowl town of Stanthorpe, Qld. Another 28ha is set aside for plantings of sugarloaf cabbage and other Chinese vegetables. Much of the lettuce is sent to domestic markets in Brisbane, Sydney and Newcastle while the Chinese cabbage is distributed to Asia through the port of Hong Kong.
