Snapshot of state land values

The Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) recent release - Australian System of National Accounts 2005-06 - contained some interesting statistics for farm property buyers and sellers. Farm land is growing in value just as wellas, if not better than residential or commercial land, but there is some variation between states. A feature article, 'Valuing land and dwellings owned by households' (as opposed to land owned by government or corporations) , included land values from 1989 onwards. Figure one shows how the total value of rural land owned by households has increased over the past 10 years. Given the amount of rural land hasn't increased much over the past years (table 1), investing in rural land in NSW and Victoria would appear to have been a good idea.
