DR ELAM makes some worthy points in his paper on growing world demand for meat. The highlights are: Global demand for meat is projected to increase by 55% (130m Metric Tonnes) by 2025. To put this in context, this is equivalent to increasing the worldcattle herd by 1.97 billion head, assuming 30% annual turnoff and 220 kilogram carcass weight. Production to meet this increase in demand will have to come from the same cropped and grazed land mass, and will thus have to come from increased crop yields(including reduced post harvest losses) and increased animal feed conversion efficiencies (15 to 20%). The biggest problem in meeting demand will be in the developing world. Increased production to meet the increased demand will cause increasing conflict with conservation values and 'clean' food requirements. We will meet the challenge and have done so in the past.
