Feed oats set to rise during winter

The cropping season has not started well in eastern Australia. Even where crops have be sown, they lack moisture below the topsoil for the young plants to grow into. The south-western slopes of New South Wales, the north-east of Victoria and some ofthe Victorian Mallee were sown early. They germinated but by early June were wanting rain. Northern NSW and southern Queensland had not had a sowing opportunity. South Australia was well advanced with sowing but pastures were not yet providing feed forstock. Western Australia was in better shape than other states with most crops sown and also moisture under the topsoil to the keep growth going. But there were growers in the Morowa area and the eastern wheat belt that had missed rain. What is emergingis a cropping season that will be later than normal. Even if heavy rains are received through June and July in the eastern states, it is going to be a bleak and cold winter for stock in eastern Australia. The demand for oats is already high and is expected to increase through the winter.
