The western United States is littered with famous conflicts of the past, Custer versus lots of Indians, outlaws versus the law, train robbers versus the railroads and cattle farmers versus sheep farmers. Across the western US - from Texas to Montana - in the late 19thcentury, a series of range wars erupted as cattle and sheep producers fought and killed over rights to land and water. Even today, cattle owners in the western US probably do not own sheep and if ranchers own sheep, they probably do not own cattle (butthey probably have a decent sized coyote population on and around their land). These conflicts shaped ranching in the west and, largely from the west, the beef industry was born.
