IRRESPECTIVE of where Merino sheep are run in Australia, stud breeders must ensure wool quality is high on their classing agenda. At Beacon in Western Australia's northern wheatbelt, stud breeders John and Marilyn Dunne and their sons Andrew, Michael, and David, have learnt that ideologies have no place in successful ram breeding. The customer's requirements must be met, even if it means changing selection emphasis. The Dunnes set up Para-keelya Merino stud in 1969 and Poll Merino stud in 1981. They supply the cropping dominated district's commercial sheep producers with rams that produce profitable easy-to-look-after progeny.
