GOVT SHAKE-UP TAKES WA MEAT BODY TO NEW HEIGHTS: Global outlook leads to massaged meat products

THE Western Australian Meat Marketing Corporation (WAMMCO) is flowing against the tide of widespread privatisation of farm marketing boards. Despite deregulation fever infecting just about every statutory marketing body during the 1990s, WAMMCO is thriving under the WA Government's wing. It has the sole rights to export WA lamb and is also a small player in thederegulated domestic market. WAMMCO lost its single-desk powers in the domestic market in 1992 after a performance review. In response to the review, WA's Coalition Government decided to give the corporation a shake-up and focus its efforts on exports.
