'Five-legume man' narrows cropping focus

LIKE many farmers seeking to improve returns and sus-tainability in the past decade, South Australian farmer David Shannon turned to crop diversification. Three years ago, the high-profile Kapunda farmer and Nuffield Scholar was growing up to five different grain legumes in any one season, as well as oilseeds and the more traditional cereals. But in a dramatic about-face, last season he harvested only wheat and canola. Instead of grain legumes, the focus is now on legume pastures which drive an expanding prime-lamb enterprise.
