SWEET SUCCESS WITH REVENUE UP 27%: Sugar industry on a roll

THE QUEENSLAND sugar industry is enjoying sweet success. Sales revenues for the 1994-95 season increased 27.2% to a record 2.053 billion dollar. Record production levels for the third consecutive year and high world sugar prices have brought a periodof prosperity to this sector of agriculture renowned for its volatility. Sugar is Australia's second largest export crop after wheat. Australia produces 4.4% of the world's sugar, and is now the largest exporter of raw sugar, recently taking over the top position from Cuba. In 1994-95, Australia's exports of raw sugar totalled 3.89 million tonnes which represented 80% of the national crop.
