Visual sheep selection can improve wool production

AN INDEPENDENT scientific analysis of wool from sheep classed as having soft rolling skin compared with those with other types of fleece has confirmed the selection system improves wool cut per head and wool processing and comfort advantages. The research was conducted by Paul swan when he was a scientist with CSIRO division of wool technology, Sydney laboratory, and involved three NSW fine wool Merino studs. In July this year, Swan left CSIRO and is now a consultant to the wool industry. The results of the trial which have been released by participating wool growers, are an important vindication of the mainly subjective sheep classing method being advocated by Merino breeding consultant Jim Watts.
