Incentives to protect wetlands

IF communities are going to ensure wetlands are here for the long haul, it is essential that governments provide attractive financial incentives at the local, State and Commonwealth levels. At least, this is the message which the community is increasingly giving to their elected representatives. That is, farmers are keen to implement environmentally sustainable management practices, but the taxation regimes should be fostering this, not just discouraging unwise actions. The emphasis needs to shift from providing compensation, to rewarding farmers and other landholders for good management.
