HAVE often mentioned those chroniclers of white settlement in Australia, the amateur artists who recorded the human endeavours to conquer a harsh and uncompromising landscape. Some of the pre-gold rush artists were not amateurs but professionals, seeking to make a living in the colonies either by selling their paintings directly or, more commonly, by putting their work into print and producing illustrated books.
