THE search is on for a tomato with the rich taste characteristics people once associated with tomatoes picked fresh from the home garden. Responding to consumer demands, plant breeders are working to develop new lines of tomatoes that not only meet production and packaging requirements, but also cany the full flavour of traditional, home-grown fruit. Their task is not easy because it is almost impossible to improve flavour without sacrificing important agronomic traits.
