THIS MONTH, THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERturns its attention to off -site and modularconstruction with two articles exploring ways inwhich a modular approach can contribute towardsa lower-carbon future, and one examining theeffi ciencies that it can bring to a constrained citycentresite.First, Smail Kechidi discusses a study thatexamined ways in which ilkeHomes could reduce theupfront carbon emissionsof its steel-framed modularhousing (page 16). Changesto the design have delivereda 12% cut in A1–A5 carbonemissions, with the potentialfor further reductions in afuture, leaner version.
