Gas-fired power generation is expected to remain high inMidcontinent Independent System Operator in August, at levelsalmost 20% higher than last year, yet August power forwardsare down more than 60% from year-ago packages, following gasprices lower.Gas is MISO’s primary dispatchable source of generation, and most members tend to baseload their coal along with wind, said Rick Smead, managing director of advisory services forRBN Energy.“So, the extraordinarily high temperatures in this hottest yearin history have driven air conditioning and swing generation,”Smead said in an email. “Gas prices being way down from lastyear means lower bills for more consumption,” he said.
