This month Preston covered most of the construction indicators in the Standard pipe section of this Report. One not addressed in that section is the monthly construction backlog release from the Associated Builders and Contractors. In that release, it was noted that overall construction backlog remained flat with May at 8.9 months but the makeup is why this is being included in the Structural and Piling section of this Report. Backlog has fallen in June in Commercial and Institutional from 9.2 months to 9.0 months. Similarly, backlog in Heavy Industrial declined to 6.4 months from 7.2 months. Infrastructure backlog is where the offsetting gain occurred moving to 11.2 months from 9.3 months. This is clearly a reflection of recent legislation supporting this type of construction. It is important in this sector primarily for piling consumption, but can include applications for HSS as well as other pipe and tube products.
