Gerald Burton Green was born in London on 16 January 1935. He moved with his parents and younger sister Valerie to Sale, Cheshire, as a small child. After attending Manchester Grammar School, he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Victoria University of Manchester. He then performed his national service in the Royal Army Medical Corps, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. He served in Paris, France and, upon returning to England, was stationed in Colchester, Essex. It was while in Colchester that Gerry met a young nurse, second lieutenant Kathleen Paul of the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps. Despite the breach of rules about fraternising between o%cers and enlisted personnel, they courted, became engaged, and married in Fleet, Hampshire, on 5th September 1959.
