As this issue of The Mariner’s Mirror hits your doorsteps the world’s leaders will be gathering in Glasgow for the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), the United Nations’ climate change conference. With Glasgow’s history as a major port and shipbuilding centre it will come as no surprise that one of the elements of debate will be global shipping. According to the International Maritime Organization’s Fourth IMO GHG Study 2020, the world’s ships emit over a billion tonnes of greenhouse gasses every year. This represents 3 per cent of total global emissions. Despite the IMO’s efforts, the rate of emissions in the sector continues to grow.
