The sugar and allied distillery industry in India is currently in a very positive phase brought about by the developments following the introduction of the National Policy on Biofuels. However, there have been developments which also indicate that environmental regulations and their implementation will become increasingly stringent. These include a. Directions from NGT regarding the sugar industry, b. Inspection of Grossly Polluting Industries in the Ganga basin by CPCB, and c. Conditions in Environmental Clearances. This paper discusses the developments in detail along with the implications of these developments for the future development of the sugar sector in India. The industry will need to keep adapting to such changes in future too in order to ensure economic as well as environmental sustainability.
