Grain barge rates rose last week, while fertilizer rates were unchanged, after Hurricane Ida made landfall as a Category 4 storm along the Louisiana coast. Barge industry participants warned activity may not return to normal until the end of the month, in a blow to barge schedules just as the autumn shipping season has begun and as the window for the last northbound and southbound shipments through the upper Mississippi river narrows.
