Dn the wake of Superstorm Sandy-a 2012 storm that left more than 8 million customers in 21 states without power-EEI's member companies and the electric power industry at large came together to develop an unprecedented culture of cooperation rarely seen in the private sector. Over the course of the recovery from Sandy, it became clear that our industry needed to augment our approach to supporting major restoration efforts. The scale of damage to infrastructure and the complexity of the evolving situation illustrated the need for a comprehensive framework to coordinate a national-level, industry-wide response. Ihe National Response Event (NRE) framework was ratified by EEI's Board of Directors in 2013. Today, it guides preparation for, and recovery from, natural or man-made disasters that cause widespread power outages.
