Planting trees on fertile soil is seen as sacrilegious by most farmers, so a land agent could get short shrift if they are cold called on behalf of an investor client interested in buying their farm for afforestation.Farming unions in Wales and Scotland suggest the frequency of cold calls is gathering pace, almost exclusively driven by non-farming businesses seeking to boost their green credentials. There is no formal database to substantiate the extent of that cold calling, but the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) has amassed a dossier of evidence to back up industry concerns that the threat from afforestation is real.
