South Korea's thermal coal imports surged in July, reaching a new peak for 2021, as record summer temperatures and maintenance at nuclear power plants boosted coal intake. July's thermal coal import volume reached 10.83 mt, up 53% on the month and up 26% on the year, the country's latest customs data show. This was around 0.34 mt shy of the highest monthly volume on record, set in September 2017, at 11.17 mt.
