The term derecho did not enter the popular American vernacular until the summer of 2012, after a powerful and fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms in late June of that year ravaged parts of the eastern United States, from Indiana to Virginia. As an article in The New York Times days following the event began, "Millions of people learned a new word over the weekend: 'derecho.' It was not a happy lesson."
