Just how much architecture expresses the cultural cosmos of its day and how closely interwoven it is with all facets of society is exemplified by the exhibition "Widerstand und Wandel - uber die 1970er Jahre in Tirol" (Resistance and Change - On the 1970s in Tyrol), curated by Innsbruck's aut. architektur und tirol. Our inner eye is presented with the following sociopolitical and cultural mise-en-scene: Bruno Kreisky is the Austrian chancellor and Eduard Wallnofer is Tyrol's governor. A referendum on the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant is being held, the European Forum Alp-bach gets its start and Tyrol hosts the Winter Olympics. A demonstration held in front of the famous Golden Roof to protest the abortion ban establishes the Tyrolean women's movement, and Marina Abramovic performs at Innsbruck's Galerie Krinzinger. Werner Pirch-ner presents his brilliant "Halbes Doppel-album" (Half Double-Album) and schools in Austria abolish their gender segregation. The progressive youth centre mk clashes with the conservative church fathers of Innsbruck, and the Tiroler Tageszeitung publishes "Horizon-te" - a cultural supplement that, in its concept as a critical medium for educating the masses, is unimaginable today. These and many other struggles, new beginnings and visions of the 1970s have shaped the society that we know today. In one of its most elaborate research projects undertaken to date, Innsbruck's aut has condensed it all into an exhibition that is nothing less than a foundational work of local cultural history. And woven into this is Tyrolean architecture with its protagonists. We encounter names such as Lackner, Parson, Prachensky and Heltschl, and those who had come back from studying with Roland Rainer in Vienna or from college studies in Graz, such as Tuscher, Schlogel or Heubacher-Sentobe, as well as those from the draughting rooms of the newly founded Faculty of Civil Engineering Sciences and Architecture who were also politically active, such as Poschl, Koberl and Kritzinger.
