Automation of the membrane filter press to allow automatic removal of the filter cake without the need for operator intervention or supervision is of particular economic importance for the dewatering of suspensions from sand and gravel works or soil remediation. In respect of its technical design, a fully automatic system must satisfy high demands. Good availability is just as important as the "fail-safe" operation of the filter press. The newly developed AKLV system (Active Cake Discharge Device) has been able to prove itself for applications in the field. The throughput, the low residual moisture content of the filter cake, the low flocculant requirement and the flexibility of this filter system with its adaptability for a wide range of suspensions properties have exceeded all expectations. Despite severe operating conditions, the reliability of the entire system with its different peripheral equipment was particularly impressive. This gives the fully automatic membrane filter press a considerable innovative edge over conventional filtering systems, bringing a real improvement in efficiency. Depending on the specific operating conditions, the new system can increase throughput by between 50 and 100% and bring a significant saving in wage costs.
