This paper describes how recent developments that have increased the power and affordability of new analysis tools for addressing problems in applied mechanics are transforming the engineering approach to many real world problems. Examples are given of how these analysis techniques are being applied to fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, complex structural dynamics and to dynamic fluid-structural interaction problems. Already, these changes have had a major impact on professional practice in these areas, and these trends are likely to continue and accelerate.
