Transmitted "by-water and only found in abalone, a viral disease never previously experienced has the 55 million dollar Victorian abalone industry concerned. Gilbert Hanson, Chairman of Seafood Industry Victoria, described the virus and its effect onthe abalone as like a "forest fire". "As the virus moves through an area, we are not sure how many abalone are going to be affected. As with a fire that can burn a whole area, yet leave a farmhouse untouched, the same applies to the way this virus operates. You would understand that the first affected would be the 'sick' but that is not always the case. It is a frustrating and testing time for all the industry because all we can do is follow the Biosecurity Protocols and wait for the science/research-tocome up with the answers," Mr. Hanson stated.
