'Hokko Maru': Third-generation research vessel for Japan's Hokkaido National Fisheries Research Institute

The new 'Hokko Maru' is the third in a line of vessels of the same name to be operated by the Hokkaido National Research Institute of Japan. The first 'Hokko Maru' was delivered in 1960, with the second following in 1976 and serving the Institute well for over 28 years before time came for it to be replaced. Each incarnation of 'Hokko Maru' has proved to be a significant advance on its predecessor, both in terms of size and capabilities, and the latest vessel to bear the name is no exception.
