Bill was a former Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He studied pharmacy at Manchester University on the four-year honours bachelor of science course in pharmaceutical chemistry. This course was only offered to two exceptional students each year and involved a great deal of study on the university's honours course in chemistry. Bill's partner on this degree course was John Midgley, who remained a lifelong friend of Bill. Bill and John both graduated with first class honours in pharmacy and in chemistry.
