THE OPEN PIT mining division of ABB Automation has successfully completed another two projects for the mining industry, equipping shovel excavators with modern drive technology. The recipients of this cutting-edge technology were ABB clients, VALE (CVRD) in Brazil, and Lafarge Zement Karsdorf GmbH in Germany. Both projects are based on the mining version of the tried and tested ABB ACS800 Multidrive. The application of that regenerative inverter unit has led to considerable savings in the total power consumption of the shovel excavators and has reduced the peak current, thus lessening charges on the power transmission network.
