ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY is a large book, coming in at 646 pages. The author, Professor Stanley Manahan, has an enviable record of published books covering environmental chemistry, toxicology, and applied chemistry. He clearly knows his subject matter with a depth and experience that allows him to write clearly and simply. The book is loosely divided into six sections. The first section (chapters 1-3) provides the introductory material required to understand the remainder of the book. This section deals with the concept of sustain-ability, the five environmental spheres (the traditional four: biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, plus the relatively new one of anthrosphere) and some basic science of chemistry, biology and biochemistry.
