Atlas Copco and Rio successfully automate surface drilling

AT THE TOUCH of a button, the Atlas Copco D65 crawler-mounted, articulated drill levelled, drilled and moved between rows as directed by computer-generated instructions. It was described as a major milestone by its allied developers, Rio Tinto and mining technology and equipment manufacturer Atlas Copco Australia, which teamed up in 2008.
