Charles Macdonald reports on the sixth Australian Longwall Mining Summit, held on the Gold Coast in mid-March. Having outgrown its Yeppoon origins, the major annual conference for the longwall mining industry moved this year to the Gold Coast. In attendance were managers and supervisors from many of NSW and Queensland's longwall mines, as well as representatives of suppliers of every complexion. For the first time the conference added an Awards Ceremony to its format, with the longwall industry voting for the top mines and suppliers in a lavish dinner compered by rugby league legend King Wally Lewis (see separate story). The conference kicked off with two papers with an economic flavour.
